Awards Accounting for Almost One-Third of Recognized Nurses in
D/FW Metroplex, More than Any Other Hospital or Health System
ARLINGTON, Texas, March 4, 2009 — Some might see it as a competition and, if so, the nurses at Texas Health Resources hospitals have dominated, winning 29 spots on the coveted "Great 100 Nurses" list, an annual award naming the best of the best in the nursing profession in the D/FW area.
Oncology Nurse Sharon Overath, R.N., O.C.N., who works at the bedside treating cancer patients at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hurst Euless Bedford, will hear none of that.
"It's about teamwork," Overath says. "These nurses here challenge me and, at the same time, they are my safety net. It's about helping each other and pushing each other to be better. Every good nurse will tell you that."
Overath and two of the nurses on her 13-bed oncology unit were named to the list, as were nurses at hospitals across the Texas Health system. All told, Texas Health nurses nabbed 29 spots on the "Great 100 Nurses" list, accounting for almost a third of the recognized nurses in D/FW — more than any other hospital or health system in the Metroplex.
"It is nothing less than a coup," said Douglas D. Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health. "Our nurses set a high bar for each other, an example of excellence that is made up of hard work and dedication for every patient, every day. I am proud that their work was recognized among the best in our region."
The Texas Nurses Association (TNA) and the Dallas-Fort Worth Nurse Executives annually sponsor the "Great 100 Nurses," which honors registered nurses in the area who exemplify excellence in the art and science of nursing. The award is unique in that honorees do not have to belong to a particular professional organization or practice in a particular clinical specialty to be recognized; any registered nurse whose place of employment is within the TNA's districts may be nominated by their peers and then ultimately selected by the TNA's Nurse Executive Group for the award.
The "Great 100 Nurses" will be honored by TNA Districts 3 and 4 and by the Dallas-Fort Worth Nurse Executives at the 19th annual gala on April 19th at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
