Pregnancy is a natural process. In most cases, birth can occur with very little intervention. Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) specialize in providing compassionate care for women through pregnancy including labor, delivery and post-partum care.
A Certified Nurse-Midwife is a primary care provider on the hospital's allied health staff licensed by the state to provide obstetric, gynecological and newborn care. CNMs work closely with board-certified obstetricians/gynecologists on the medical staff at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen.
According to the American College of Nurse-Midwives, caring for women during labor and birth is the central role of the certified nurse-midwife. Midwives have special expertise in supporting women to maintain a healthy pregnancy and birth and are trained to provide:
- Primary health care to women for comprehensive gynecologic and maternity care
- Knowledge, skills and education to help women with their labor and birth
- Prescriptions for many of the medications and health care products women may need during pregnancy
CNMs offer you the flexibility to personalize your birth plan, which may include pain management medication or epidurals. Texas Health Allen even offers the use of a hydrotherapy tub for pain control during labor. You can work with a CNM to facilitate the course of birth, not dictate the way the process should occur, but still offer intervention only when necessary or requested.
When it comes to the delivery of your baby, you will be cared for in Texas Health Allen's Family Birthplace, where the emphasis is placed on a family-centered environment of care, which can truly enhances the birth experience.
