The Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital Center for Diabetes Self-Management Education provides patient education that meets criteria established by the American Diabetes Association.
This education focuses on patients with Type I diabetes, Type II diabetes, pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes.
An individualized assessment in conjunction with the treating physician determines which of the following content areas are required:
- Diabetes disease process and treatment options
- Incorporating nutritional management and physical activity into your lifestyle
- Safely using medications, including oral anti-diabetic agents and insulin
- Glucose monitoring and self-management
- Preventing, detecting and treating acute and chronic complications
- Addressing psychosocial issues, promoting health and implementing behavioral changes
Sessions may be provided in individual or group settings, based on the patient's identified needs.
The sessions are conducted by a registered nurse and/or a registered dietitian with specialized training in diabetes care.
