A breast cancer survivor, Dana McGuirk knows and empathizes with the uncertainty that a breast cancer diagnosis can and will bring to her patients.
Born in Denver, Colo., McGuirk says she always knew she wanted to be a nurse. She graduated from the Harris School of Nursing at Texas Christian University in 1979, and took her first job as a med/surg and neurology nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Fort Worth.
In 1983, McGuirk joined the staff of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth as a women's services nurse.
McGuirk began her ministry of helping breast cancer patients during her own battle with breast cancer. As a surgical recovery nurse at Texas Health Fort Worth, McGuirk formed relationships with patients who had breast cancer surgery, giving them resources and a friend to talk to.
"I found myself connected to these women and realized they were scared just as I had been," she said. "I remember how it made me feel to talk to someone that had been through the same thing I was going through."
McGuirk helps patients:
- Create a plan of care
- Understand their treatment options
- Learn about their pre- and post-operation procedures and treatment
- Understand the information from their physician
- Connect with financial resources and support groups
- Know what to expect through the care process
- Understand their emotions and how to communicate their feelings
- Understand what it means to be a survivor
McGuirk's office is in the Klabzuba Center at 1300 W. Terrell Ave.
