Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS)

The Imaging Department at Texas Health Plano is "filmless." That means that images are captured digitally, transmitted and stored in the hospital's Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

PACS is an advanced electronic diagnostic imaging system that allows radiologists on the medical staff to access and review images online and from a remote location — all within seconds after images are taken. Referring physicians can also access the images in their offices.

The system can enable quicker turnaround on imaging reports, remote consultation when needed, and more efficient care for patients.

In addition, Texas Health Plano uses voice dictation which allows radiologists on the medical staff to "digitally" sign reports then fax them to the referring physician's office soon after dictation. In some cases, the reports arrive to the referring physician's office before the patient's return visit.
