Wound Care

The Outpatient Rehabilitation Services department at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital provides treatment of all types of wounds. Physical and occupational therapists have the skills and knowledge to assess and treat wounds caused by injury or disease.

If a patient is referred for wound care, depending on the location of the wound, he or she will be scheduled with the appropriate therapist. On the first visit, the patient will be thoroughly evaluated by a licensed therapist. The exam will include a history, assessment of the wound and examination of sensation, joint mobility and swelling. The wound will be cleansed and the appropriate dressing will be applied. The referring physician will be updated on the progress through regular communications with the therapist.

Education on the proper care of wounds is very important. Patient and family members may be instructed on techniques to manage the wound at home. Patients will also learn the signs and symptoms of infection and when it is appropriate to contact a physician. A nutritionist is on staff for consultation regarding a diet that encourages wound healing.

At Texas Health Arlington Memorial, the patient is an important part of the wound care team that includes the physician and therapist. Team members work together to achieve the desired outcome of complete wound healing.
