Prevention and Detection
Cancer is a word that is still scary to most people. Almost 80,000 Texans are diagnosed with a form of cancer every year. Recent years have seen encouraging improvements in survival rates.

In many cases, the key to surviving cancer is early detection. For this reason, screenings are extremely important. Women should have regular gynecological check-ups and mammograms; men over 40 should have a regular prostate screening; and men and women over 50 should have a colon screening.

Prostate Screening
Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford offers a free prostate screening once a year, to help in the early detection of prostate cancer. Men 45 and older, with a recommended age limit of 75, should be tested annually. Men with a family history of prostate cancer or who are black or Hispanic should be screened beginning at age 40. It is also recommended that a baseline prostate-specific antigen lab test (PSA) be done at age 40. Check the hospital calendar for information about the next prostate screening. To make an appointment, call 1-877-THR-WELL (1-877-847-9355).

Patient Support and Activities

Bluebonnet Retreat
The Bluebonnet Retreat is made possible by funding from the Texas Health HEB Hospital Foundation. The Bluebonnet Retreat is the first camp in Texas designed for adults with cancer and is offered two times each year. The camp experience is free and open to any adult over age 18 who has received a cancer diagnosis or cancer treatment within the past five years. Attendance is limited to 40 campers, and first-time campers receive priority.

The Bluebonnet Retreat is a three-day, two-night camp that encourages a time for listening, learning, arts, crafts, physical activities, sharing, caring and cancer education. It provides campers the opportunity to retreat and relax in a comforting atmosphere amidst the beauties of nature at Garrett Creek Ranch in Paradise, Texas. Campers and counselors stay on the 460-acre ranch in rustic guestrooms decorated in different historical themes. Breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks are provided. Activities include recreation, social events, devotionals and educational opportunities, arts and crafts, physical activities, cancer education and plenty of time for sharing between campers and counselors.

The Bluebonnet Retreat is staffed by Texas Health HEB employees, Texas Health Resources employees and other professionals from the community. They are joined by physicians, nurses, social workers, dietitians, physical and occupational therapists, radiation therapists, pastoral care associates and various volunteers.

For information about the next retreat, call 817-848-4889. Follow this link to apply as a camper or a counselor.

Breast Cancer Support Groups
Patient meetings provide a special forum in which breast cancer survivors can share experiences with others or simply listen and take comfort from those who know and understand.

Groups meet at 11 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center at 251 Westpark Way in Euless, Texas. Another group meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Breast Care Center of North Texas at 1615 Hospital Parkway, Suite 109, Bedford, Texas.

Partner meetings also provide a special forum in which spouses or significant others of breast cancer survivors can share caregiver experiences with each other. The group is facilitated by a trained male facilitator whose wife is a breast cancer survivor. It meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Breast Care Center of North Texas.

Day of Beauty
A diagnosis of cancer can be as much of a blow to a woman's self-esteem as it is to her health. Treatment with chemotherapy and radiation often leads to hair loss and can make it challenging to feel beautiful while undergoing therapy.

Because how one looks on the outside often reflects how one feels on the inside, Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital provides women with cancer a type of treatment that does not require CT scans, needles, medications or even a doctor. Foundation, lipstick, mascara and a lot of special pampering is always first on the list at Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital's Day of Beauty.

Saks Fifth Avenue beauty consultants are on hand to provide special treatment designed specifically to lift the spirit of cancer patients. Free makeovers are always the doctor's order of the day with a special prescription written for complimentary cosmetics. Hand massages, Pilates, wig fitting, and chair massages make it a complete day of rest and relaxation.

Women currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation are invited to attend. Day of Beauty is held two times per year (April and October). Reservations are required and space is limited. For more information, call 817-848-4716.

Dialogue Support Group
Dialogue is an ongoing support group for cancer patients, and their family and friends. It is an opportunity to share common experiences, problems, and solutions in a supportive atmosphere. Patients are able to talk confidentially with others who are coping with cancer. The Dialogue Support Group is designed to help you better understand and learn to live with cancer. Group meetings are led by trained health care professionals who are present to listen and help.

Meetings are at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays on the second floor of the hospital. For more information, call the Pastoral Care department at 817-848-4811.

Lymphedema Support Group

The group provides an opportunity for individuals to share information concerning lymphedema therapy protocols, nutrition, diet and exercise. Different speakers make presentations on various topics. The goal of the Lymphedema Support Group is to provide participants with information on how to better manage their condition.

Individuals with lymphedema, or those who are at risk for developing it, are encouraged to attend. Groups meet at 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center. For more information, call 817-848-8151.
