Struggling with infertility is a rollercoaster ride of raised hopes, diminished dreams, new possibilities and hard realities. By the time many couples reach the Assisted Reproductive Technology Services (ARTS) program, they may feel defeated. They may have wrangled with insurance companies for coverage, been told not to worry because they are still young and often haven't shared their struggle with others.
"Many couples are absolutely exhausted by the time they get to our program," said Debbie Lynch, R.N., nurse manager for the ARTS program at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.
One of the key ways that the ARTS program helps couples cope with infertility is through our patient support.
"We are dedicated to listening to our patients," said Lynch. "We understand that our patients need to get their emotions out, whether it is anger, sadness or frustration. We accept our patients no matter how they are on a given day."
Lynch offers the following advice to couples who are coping with infertility:
- Develop a plan. Similar to developing a plan for buying a house, couples should develop a plan for infertility treatment. How much are you willing to spend? How much time are you willing to dedicate to this? What is your next step? Having a plan will help you feel more in control and will help you get through those days that are particularly difficult.
- Find a person you can turn to for support. Couples often don't talk with others about their struggle with infertility. Find someone you can share openly and honestly with about your infertility treatments and emotions.
- Consider alternative therapy options. Many women find that complementary (non-medical) treatments, such as acupuncture, massage and yoga, can relieve side effects and help improve your attitude and outlook. Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas offers an Integrative Medicine Program which provides a number of complementary methods, and Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital offers a Healing Arts Center with clinical aromatherapy services provided by certified clinical aromatherapy practitioners.
- Strive to balance optimism and realism. While optimism is important in undergoing any infertility treatment, staying realistic can help you make smart choices as you work your way through the emotional battlefield of treatment. Try to stay up to date on your diagnosis and the latest technology so you can get a good handle on your chance of success with each treatment. Also, stay active and keep doing the things that bring you joy in your day-to-day life.
While caregivers in the ARTS program are dedicated to being honest and realistic with patients, a common thread of hope also runs through each team member of the ARTS program.
