Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas is pleased to announce that neurosurgeons on the hospital's medical staff were the first in the United States to utilize BrainSUITE^TM technology in PHD's new Nancy B. Hamon Intra-operative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (iMRI) Neurosurgical Suite. One of the first in the world, the state-of-the-art operating room provides neurosurgeons on the medical staff with real-time, decision-making information to treat complicated brain tumors and other brain surgery cases.

Clinical Features
BrainSUITE^TM technology helps to optimize brain surgery by combining image-guided surgery, high-field magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) within the operating room and data management and visualization technology. This specialized operating environment fully integrates all available and relevant surgical and diagnostic tools to treat complicated brain tumors and other neurosurgical cases.

The high-field iMRI provides neurosurgeons on the medical staff immediate access to new images of the brain before, during and at the conclusion of the surgical procedure. Traditionally these images have only been available either prior to the surgery or after the surgery has been completed. Access to real-time images assists the surgeon with removing as much tumor as possible by allowing them the ability to more fully differentiate diseased tissue from healthy tissue, which can also help protect critical areas of the brain.

Another key element of the technology is the suite's neuro-navigation system. The navigation system links the real-time MRI images with the actual spatial position of the surgical instruments. The navigation system serves like a GPS (global positioning system) for the brain, providing instant updates on where the instruments are in relation to the tumor. This can be especially important when the surgery is being performed close to critical structures within the brain.

Conditions
The Hamon iMRI Neurosurgical Suite, is a fully integrated component of Texas Health Dallas' brain tumor and neuroscience services. There are over ten neurosurgeons on the hospital's medical staff, one of the largest numbers among non-academic hospitals in the region. In addition, the hospital has a neuro-oncologist on the medical staff, one of only two in North Texas.

The technology in the iMRI Neurosurgical Suite can be used for a variety of conditions requiring brain surgery such as:

Glioma and other complicated primary tumor resection
Metastases to the brain
Pituitary tumor surgery
Epilepsy surgery
Biopsy
Vascular surgery, including vascular malformations in the brain
