Vascular brachytherapy is performed by physicians on the medical staff on patients with recurring blockages in coronary artery stents. A stent is a mesh tube that is used to open a blocked coronary artery. When stents are used, restenosis — a re-clogging caused by the growth of cells forming scar tissue inside the blood vessels — can occur.
Vascular brachytherapy uses radiation to inhibit cell growth, thereby reducing restenosis. Introduced through a specially designed catheter, radiation seeds are placed in the body for less than five minutes to treat the targeted site.
