The Kupferle Health Board has carried out its mission for almost as long as its namesaake, Doris Kupferle, battled breast cancer. The board's 47 volunteer members use the memory of her courage and optimism to help hundreds of women in the community.
Although the Kupferle Health Board's primary focus has been breast cancer, it now supports colon, cervical and bone density screenings, breast diagnostic procedures and women's cardiac education at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospitals.
Over the years, the board has contributed to many projects and organizations, including the Wellness for Life mobile health units. Last year, the units reached approximately 3,200 women in the community. Of those, the Kupferle Health Board provided funding for 1,000 women who were in medically underserved areas to receive screening. Recently, the board made a gift of $25,000 to help establish a special women's collection on heart disease for the new Harris Methodist Heart Center.
The purpose of the Kupferle Health Board is to assist, encourage, educate and promote women's health awareness for Tarrant County women; educate, assist Harris Methodist breast centers financially through fundraising events, and to increase community awareness of the services available throughout Tarrant County for women's health and breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Each year, the board follows a structure in carrying out its goal, with four general meetings and at least four executive meetings. The educational committee plans at least two outreach events, which recently have included the Hispanic Wellness Fair and the African-American Health Expo. At these events, board members staff a booth and hand out educational material on early detection of breast cancer and other women's health issues.
Each spring, the Kupferle Health Board organizes the Puttin' on the Pink Benefit Luncheon and Fashion Presentation. This fundraising event is focused on providing care for the underserved women of Tarrant County through mobile mammography and other health screenings aimed at early detection and diagnosis, as well as community education programs.
