The M.J. and Alice S. Neeley Hydrotherapy Center at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth is home to a heated indoor pool at the Mabee Rehabilitation Center. The pool, which is wheelchair accessible, can hold a class of up to 15 individuals yet is small enough for more personal attention. The water is 3 to 4 feet deep and is maintained at a comfortable 86 to 90 degrees.
For individuals with arthritis, aquatics therapy may help improve fitness and range of motion and may also help relive pain and stiffness. It may also help reduce injured athletes recovery time and provide a supplemental training routine while recovering from an injury. Buoyancy, decreased gravity, low-impact exercise and variable resistance are all benefits of the aquatic environment.
Anyone can benefit from aquatics programs at the Mabee Rehabilitation Center. Participants include patients as well as community members. Individuals may be dealing with physical challenges as a result of injury, illness, disease and/or aging. Typical diagnoses include, but are not limited to:
- Orthopedic injury
- Neurological disease
- Injuries resulting from trauma
- Rheumatic disorder
- Chronic pain
Aquatic therapy is available with a physician prescription through the Texas Health Mabee Rehab Center Physical and Occupational Therapy departments.
There are three aquatics programs available at the Mabee Rehabilitation Center:
- Aqua Fit: Aqua Fit classes offer low-intensity, low-impact exercise. The focus is on increasing flexibility, strength, balance and reducing pain.
- Hydro Fit: The most challenging of the aquatics programs, Hydro Fit offers moderately intense aerobic exercise to build strength, muscle tone and endurance. Instructors are trained and certified in aquatic exercise.
- H2O Fit: Moderate water class using strength training equipment.
