As a faith-based health care system, Texas Health Resources is committed to partnering with faith communities in North Texas to provide health promotion and education services. More than 70 volunteer nurses serve more than 50 faith communities in North Texas through Texas Health's Faith Community Nursing program. The goal of the program is the intentional integration of the practice of faith with the practice of nursing to care for the whole person — body, mind and spirit — and to improve the health of the communities we serve. Faith Community Nurses practice with an understanding of the spiritual and religious beliefs that underlie health.
Promoting Good Stewardship of Health The Faith Community Nursing program consists of a hospital-based faith community coordinator who works with a nurse within a faith community. The coordinator and nurse promote health and healthy choices by educating the faith community about health services, wellness and disease prevention. They support individuals, families and communities in becoming more active partners in the stewardship of personal and community health resources.
Faith Community Nurses provide health promotion and educational services, which may include health fairs, hospital and home visits, educational programs, risk assessments, support groups and office hours.
Training Faith Community Nurses Faith Community Nursing was recognized as a nursing specialty in 1998 by the American Nurses Association. Texas Health provides a Basic Parish Nurse Preparation Course and coordinator training using the International Parish Nurse Resource Center curriculum. The training includes methods for developing and supporting faith community nursing programs, writing job descriptions, developing policies and documentation systems, supporting health ministries, and other faith/health resources. The hospital Faith Community Nursing coordinator provides orientation, continuing education opportunities and support to the nurses in faith communities.
