Neuropsychology Services

Neuropsychology is part of a broad continuum of neuroscience services provided at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, which includes patient information and education, research, advanced surgical procedures and rehabilitation for many different neurological conditions.

A Program Tailored to Individual Needs

The patient's neurologist, neurosurgeon or primary care physician typically requests an assessment to help determine the brain's ability to function in areas such as problem-solving, language, memory, sensory, perception and emotion. However, a physician referral is not required.

A neuropsychological assessment can assist physicians in:

  • Determining proper diagnosis
  • Evaluating the neurodiagnostic implications of disease or injury
  • Identifying cognitive disorders
  • Assessing psychiatric contributions to cognitive functioning
  • Evaluating ability to function independently
  • Developing cognitive/behavioral compensation strategies
  • Developing a baseline to measure brain function over time
  • Assessing ability to return to work
  • Assessment of cognitive and emotional strengths and weaknesses

Evaluations can be personally tailored to the specific referral question and range from one hour to a full day of assessments, depending on the need. After the diagnostic evaluation, recommendations may include:

  • Long-term care planning and placement issues
  • Referral for additional medical diagnostic assessments
  • Psychological testing
  • Cognitive rehabilitation
  • Individual and family counseling
  • Support groups
  • Stress management and relaxation
  • Referral for psychiatric medications

A neuropsychological/psychological evaluation can benefit patients experiencing the following conditions:

  • Memory decline (Dementia)
  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy
  • Head injuries
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Brain tumor
  • Seizure disorders
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Toxic or other encephalopathies
  • Preparation for bariatric surgery
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

The goal of obtaining neuropsychological services is to help both the patient and the caregiver better understand how central nervous system diseases or injuries affect cognitive and behavioral functioning without invasive procedures.
