Athletic Training True to our mission to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve, the Ben Hogan Sports Therapy Institute is able to provide licensed athletic training services for various sporting events. In cooperation with physicians and other health care professionals, a certified athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs and other athletic settings.

Massage Therapy Massage therapists use a variety of techniques to loosen muscles and their connective tissue coverings (called fascia). Another common technique is to apply skillfully directed pressure to release painful trigger points in both the muscle and the fascia. Though the effects of a single session may be temporary, a well-spaced series can actually reverse chronic muscle contraction.
- Will a massage hurt?
A massage should always be relaxing and enjoyable. If your massage therapist is working in an area of chronic pain, there may be some initial discomfort that should quickly ease. If you do experience pain during a massage session, always let your massage therapist know so they can adapt to your comfort level.

- How does massage promote health?
Massage is, of course, more than just a luxury. It helps promote health by relieving stress, reducing muscle tension, increasing circulation and enhancing overall energy and vitality.
Services include:
- Swedish Massage
This light, noninvasive massage helps stimulate the superficial tissue, which allows the blood to flow more smoothly, and helps reduce lactic acid buildup in the muscle. It is also used to facilitate relaxation within the superficial muscles.
- Neuromuscular Massage
Neuromuscular Massage is used in conjunction with Swedish massage to allow the therapist to go to the deeper levels of the muscle tissue. It is also used to break up any adhesions or scar tissue within the muscle.
- Myofascial Release
Myofascial Release primarily centers on the fascial system within the body. This system surrounds the entire body from head to toe. The process of Myofascial Release is to spread the fascial restrictions back to a homeostasis to allow free movement without pain.
- Somatic Therapy
Somatic Therapy is an active therapy between patient and therapist that uses resisted movement to regain the neurological connection from the muscle to the brain.
- Pre- and Post-Event Sports Massage
Pre-event massage is a brief and invigorating 15 to 20 minute massage usually performed within an hour of competition to warm and energize the muscles. Post-event massage will be calming and relaxing with the goal of easing pain and soreness and reducing inflammation. The massage therapist will use a slow compression technique to bring blood and oxygen to tense areas and flush out any metabolic waste products.
- On-Site Chair Massage
Primarily used in an outreach program to local businesses. Massage therapists work in intervals of 15 to 20 minutes, concentrating on the neck, shoulders and back.

Concussion Management A concussion is an injury to the brain common to many sports. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate there are 300,000 sports concussions among children and adolescents in the United States each year.
Neuropsychological testing is a tool to help doctors find out when an athlete has recovered from a concussion and can safely return to sports or activity. A baseline test, offered online, takes about 30 minutes. Taking a baseline is like "giving your brain a physical" and establishes a normal level of cognitive (brain) function.
