Staff

The Oncology Care Unit nursing staff meets the inpatient and outpatient needs of acute care and episodic patients and their families. Nurses provide services through a coordinated, interdisciplinary approach; in a warm, compassionate setting, with attention to patient rights, cultural variations and psychosocial needs.

The OCU is staffed with registered nurses, patient care technicians, clergy, medical staff, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, case managers, a clinical nurse specialist in oncology and social workers. These practitioners are available to provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As cancer treatments become more complex, patients require increasingly specialized care. The nurses provide this level of care. Presently, more than half of the full-time nursing staff on the unit are Oncology Certified Nurses (OCN) or Advanced Oncology Certified Nurses (AOCN).

Nurses who achieve these certifications have completed specialized education and examinations in oncology nursing, according to the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. Since certification is based on current professional practice, it ensures that certified nurses have the most up-to-date knowledge about cancer care.
