There is nothing like the miracle of a newborn child. And with that miracle comes the miracle of a mother's milk. A true gift to her baby, the rich milk a mother produces can nourish and protect an infant like nothing else. With its natural wealth of nutrients and unique antibodies, human breast milk is the best food and preventative medicine for a newborn.
A mother's milk can often protect preemies against life-threatening diseases and dramatically improve their health and brain development. However, mothers of these fragile infants are often unable to produce enough of this critical nourishment. Thankfully, there is now an alternative place to get it: the Mothers' Milk Bank of North Texas in Fort Worth.
Donor mothers are carefully screened, undergo a blood test and are instructed in safe milk collection techniques. Once collected, the milk is pasteurized, and then tested to ensure no bacteria is present. Finally, it is frozen until prescribed.
