Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville Recognized by State for Breastfeeding Efforts

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville has been named a 2011 Texas Ten Step Facility by the Department of State Health Services and the Texas Hospital Association.

The designation recognizes hospitals that provide evidence-based care to improve breastfeeding outcomes, such as having trained staff available to assist breastfeeding mothers, keeping mom and baby together during the hospital stay, and providing resources for continued care after discharge.

“We take breastfeeding support for our new mothers very seriously here at Texas Health Stephenville,” said Devra LeFevre, R.N., director of Women’s Services for Texas Health Stephenville. “We’ve seen that babies who breastfeed experience less jaundice after birth. Breastfeeding also helps babies and mothers bond. Our Family Resource Center does a great job providing all kinds of support to families after discharge, including jaundice and feeding evaluations.”

Texas Health Stephenville is also one of six facilities in Texas to be named a Baby-Friendly Hospital by the World Health Organization. The other five Texas facilities to earn the designation are also part of the Texas Health Resources system in Allen, Arlington, Bedford, Fort Worth, and Plano.

As part of both the Texas Ten Step process and the review process for Baby-Friendly Hospital designation, Texas Health Stephenville has implemented policies to support new mothers before, during, and after delivery. These practices help the hospital increase the percent of mothers who reach their breastfeeding goals, and are an essential step toward meeting the Healthy People 2020 Breastfeeding Objectives.
