Eight Texas Health Resources Hospitals Recognized by State for Breastfeeding Programs|
ARLINGTON, Texas — Eight Texas Health Resources hospitals have been named 2011 Texas Ten Step Facilities by the Department of State Health Services and the Texas Hospital Association.
The designation recognizes hospitals that provide evidence-based care to improve breastfeeding outcomes, such as having trained staff available to assist breastfeeding mothers, keeping mom and baby together during the hospital stay, and providing resources for continued care after discharge.
The recognized hospitals are:
- Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen
- Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital
- Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne
- Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas
- Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth
- Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford
- Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano
- Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville
Six of the Texas Health hospitals named a Texas Ten Step Facility also are the only six facilities in Texas to be named a Baby-Friendly Hospital by the World Health Organization. Those hospitals are in Allen, Arlington, Bedford, Fort Worth, Plano and Stephenville.
“We take breastfeeding support for our new mothers very seriously here at Texas Health hospitals,” said Joan Clark, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, CENP, FACHE, FAAN, Texas Health Resources chief nursing executive. “We’ve seen that babies who breastfeed experience less jaundice after birth. Breastfeeding also helps babies and mothers bond. I applaud our breastfeeding support resources for the help they provide daily to moms who want help with breastfeeding.”
As part of both the Texas Ten Step process and the review process for Baby-Friendly Hospital designation, Texas Health hospitals have implemented policies to support new mothers before, during, and after delivery. These practices help the hospital increase the percent of mothers who reach their breastfeeding goals, and are an essential step toward meeting the Healthy People 2020 Breastfeeding Objectives.
