13-Bed Surgical Recovery Unit Opens at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen
08/16/2011

ALLEN, Texas — The new 13-bed surgical recovery unit at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen is essentially Kim Stewart’s baby. Since she joined the hospital in November as manager of outpatient and inpatient surgery, Stewart has shepherded the project along. No detail has been too small as she creates the ideal patient experience for those undergoing surgery at Texas Health Allen.

Kim Stewart led Texas Health Allen's efforts to create a surgical recovery unit.

For starters, the inpatient recovery unit is located right down the hall from the operating rooms so patients don’t have to travel through public spaces in the hospital. The beds are specially designed to help accommodate patients — even stretching to accommodate taller patients and with features that help nurses turn patients. Furniture in the recovery rooms takes into account the special needs of surgery patients too. The chairs are designed to sit higher and are made wider to accommodate patients with hip replacements and other major surgeries.

“Being here while the space was being created really helped me be able to choose options that were best for our patients,” said Stewart, a nurse with 16 years caring for surgical patients. “I visit each patient on the unit every day and find that patients and their families feel it’s a homelike environment, which is important to help with recovery. Our employees love to work on this unit.”

It wasn’t just the physical details of the space that received special attention in the planning process, Stewart has set a high standard for the employees who work there. The unit is staffed primarily by nurses with experience caring for surgical patients. The hospital purposely has chosen to keep the staffing ratios low so that nurses can spend more time with each patient, typically caring for three or four patients a day.

In addition to the 13-bed inpatient recovery unit, Texas Health Allen also updated the fixtures in the 12-bed day surgery recovery area.

Texas Health Allen offers a wide range of surgical procedures for patients. Physicians on the medical staff at the hospital offer breast, colorectal, gynecological, orthopedic, podiatric, spine, cosmetic and reconstructive and urological surgery.

“We are pleased with how the project turned out,” said Sheila McKinney, hospital president. “The time and attention spent making sure this unit benefits our patients and their families is just one example of how our hospital lives out our mission to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve.”
