Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen Offers Simple Tool That Could Help Save a Life

ALLEN, Texas — In an emergency, could your loved ones provide detailed medical information about your health conditions and medications to first responders?

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen is providing Vials of L.I.F.E (Lifesaving Information for Emergencies) to members of the community. The Vial of L.I.F.E is a life-saving tool that lists medical history and information, such as current allergies, medications and emergency contact numbers. The Vials of L.I.F.E. are available to the community at no cost.

People in the community are urged to:

  • Fill out their medical information
  • Place it into a “Vial of L.I.F.E”
  • Place the vial in the right side of the refrigerator door, and
  • Put the red sticker provided on their front entryway to the house and another on the refrigerator.

First responders are trained to look for the vial in the refrigerator door if they see the red sticker on the front door. First responders then bring the vial with the patient to the emergency room. The vials also could be used in non-emergencies to bring to doctor’s appointments so that all medications can be easily reviewed.

“Texas Health Allen is committed to providing quality care in a timely manner,” said Lori Templin, R.N., who is spearheading the project. “The Vial of L.I.F.E., when filled out properly, can give medical staff vital medical information in an instant, even when the patient cannot. In an emergency minutes matter and having that information is crucial.”

Volunteers assembled the vials, which will available at community events. Nurses also may offer it to patients at the hospital who might benefit from having the information ready at home. The vials also are available for free in the hospital’s main gift shop, which is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

“Filling out the information in the Vial of L.I.F.E. and posting the sticker just takes a few minutes,” said Sheila McKinney, hospital president. “But taking those few minutes before a crisis could save lives in a medical emergency.”
