“The goal of our program is to relieve suffering and provide the best quality of life for patients and their families,” said Denise Claussen, chief nursing officer of Texas Health Kaufman.
Funds from the hospital Auxiliary helped fund the new center.
The program includes a suite next to the patient room for family to stay nearby their loved one. The patient room features home-like decorations and a peaceful view of the Kaufman countryside. Nurses, chaplains, physicians and other hospital personnel are trained to optimize comfort with safe and effective management of pain and changing symptoms.
“We also provide family support, transition to an appropriate level of care, and comfort the patient and family facing grief and loss,” said Patsy Youngs, president of Texas Health Kaufman.
As opposed to hospice care, which is for terminally ill patients when treatments are no longer curative, palliative care is often provided while patients continue to receive treatment for their underlying condition. Some patients who receive palliative care end up transitioning out of the program when symptoms improve.
“Patients may continue to receive regular treatments, while our palliative care team cares for their emotional and spiritual needs — and works to relieve pain,” Claussen said. “We’re also here for the family and ready to do whatever we can to support them.”
