Mammography Special for Breast Cancer Awareness Month Available at Texas Health Stephenville|
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Along with football and enjoying the cooler weather, there is a new October tradition that could save your life. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it is a great time to schedule an annual screening mammogram.
To schedule an appointment for a mammogram at Texas Health Stephenville, call 254-965-1223.
From Oct. 8 to 18, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville will offer discounted digital screening mammograms. The screening mammograms will cost $75 during that time period and no insurance claims will be filed. Payment is due at the time of service. The special will enable women without insurance, or with high deductible plans, to schedule their annual mammogram without worrying about the full cost of the test.
The National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the American College of Radiology recommend women age 40 and older have annual mammograms. Women with dense breasts or under 50 years old are specifically encouraged to get a digital mammogram, according to breastcancer.org.
“For women who fit the criteria, getting a yearly mammogram should be an appointment they don’t miss,” said Dr. Nanette Evans, a physician on the medical staff at Texas Health Stephenville. “Mammograms help physicians catch breast cancer in the earliest, and most treatable, stages.”
This year’s screening includes women with breast implants. These are not typically included in promotional screenings as the procedure requires more images and is more time-consuming for the mammographer and radiologist, increasing the cost.
“We’re including breast implants in our promotional screening because we truly want every woman to be able to afford a mammogram,” Evans said.
Promotional mammograms are for women who are not experiencing any breast problems, such as lumps, nipple discharges or skin changes. Women who notice any of these conditions should check with their family care or OB/GYN physician to schedule a diagnostic mammogram.
Texas Health Stephenville recently received Accreditation for Stereotactic Breast Biopsies from the American College of Radiology (ACR). The accreditation means that the hospital voluntarily underwent a vigorous review process to ensure that it meets nationally accepted standards of care, according to the ACR. The prestigious, voluntary accreditation validates Texas Health Stephenville’s expertise in procedures such as biopsy of tiny calcifications for which women would traditionally have to undergo surgery.
“Accreditation brings a level of assurance of excellence of care to the residents of Erath County and surrounding communities,” Evans said. “We wanted to accomplish it for our community.”
Evans noted that the ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety.
“We are pleased to offer a screening mammogram special to women of Erath County as one way we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said Christopher Leu, hospital president.
