Less Holiday Stress is Goal of Support Group at Texas Health Stephenville
12/05/2012

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Holidays bring enjoyable times with family and friends, with the whirl of activities frequently accentuated with seasonal treats. But the end-of-year festivities can also mean physical and emotional stress for many, resulting in increased incidence of heart failure.

To help community members protect their hearts during the holiday season, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville is sponsoring a Heart Failure Support meeting at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7 in the hospital’s Community Room.

The meeting is aimed at people who have been diagnosed with heart failure, either recently or in the past. There is no cost, and RSVP is not required. Light, healthy snacks will be served. Seating is limited, so plan to come early.

Topics include:

  • “What, Why and How to Live with Heart Failure” — Brian Andrews, B.S., R.R.T., R.C.P., Texas Health Stephenville director of cardiopulmonary services
  • “Eating Through the Holidays” — Laurie Lively, R.D., L.D., clinical dietitian at the hospital

“Holiday stressors such as financial issues, an overbooked schedule and loneliness when away from family can cause significant complications to existing cardiac conditions,” said Andrews. “On top of this, overeating puts extra stress on the heart and other organs.”

Andrews said the meeting is a great opportunity to learn practical ways to decrease stress over the holidays.
