Simple Resolutions Can Be Easier to Maintain|
PLANO, Texas — For many, a new year represents a blank slate where many goals are set and resolutions planned. But too often setting lofty resolutions actually sets a person up for failure.
It’s much easier to make simple changes to a routine slowly. Rather than going from being sedentary to setting a goal to run five miles, try jogging three times a week for 30 minutes. If dietary changes are planned, don’t aim to go vegan if you don’t eat many vegetables now. Adding an extra fruit or vegetable to each meal may be a more reasonable goal.
“Whatever your goals it’s important to make them attainable so that you won’t get frustrated and give up,” said Dr. Humera Ahmed, a physician on the medical staff at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano. “I’d rather people consistently exercise or add a fruit or vegetable to each meal through the year, than to work out so hard they burn out in a matter of weeks. Simple changes really are the most effective at working and improving an individual’s overall well-being.”
To help, Texas Health Resources has launched TexasHealth.org/Well-Being. The site offers a free daily email reminder with a simple task to complete. It could be something as easy as think of one word to describe how you want your day to be to completing 10 quick stretches. The idea is that it can be done in less than five minutes a day and yet still improve well-being. The site also includes healthy recipes and other resources.
