The awards were presented during a yearly system-wide event led by Doug Hawthorne, chief executive officer of Texas Health Resources.

The recipients included Anita Hurtado, R.N., infection preventionist; Megan Lopez, admitting clerk; Judy Collins, chaplain; and Wilma Polley, volunteer.

Hurtado, a 19 year employee of Texas Health Kaufman, accepted the Patient Safety Star award for her work educating staff on new quality initiatives including fall prevention and hand hygiene.

The Mission award was presented to Lopez, a two year employee, for her considerate and compassionate care to patients and their families.

“As an admissions clerk in the emergency department, she is the first person many of our patients and their family members come into contact with,” said Patsy Youngs, president of Texas Health Kaufman. “It’s her calm demeanor that provides a soothing atmosphere in emergent situations.”

Collins, who’s been at Texas Health Kaufman for six years, received the Community Service award. She was recognized for continuing her work as a chaplain outside the walls of the hospital and volunteering her time with Meals on Wheels, the Salvation Army and numerous mission trips to the Texas Valley.

Volunteer Wilma Polley was given the Helping Hands award for her 14 years of service in the hospital’s gift shop and most recently as a patient greeter.

“Each of these employees truly embodies our mission to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve,” Youngs said. “Whether behind the scenes or on the frontline of care, they have made a difference in the lives of our patients and continue to do so each day.”
