“I’m honored to have received this recognition,” said Merritt, a fifth generation North Texan. “In just about any category you could measure a physician, there are so many of my colleagues who surpass me in their expertise and care for patients. I was very surprised by this tribute."

Merritt is a board-certified ophthalmologist with subspecialty fellowship training in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery. He attended The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston for medical school and post graduate training. It was during his work as a chemist in his college laboratory when he decided to pursue a career in ophthalmology.

“A fellow student told me that his father, who practiced medicine for 60 years, had regretted not becoming an ophthalmologist and that prompted me to go down this path,” Merritt said. “It’s been a wonderful career choice and I’m pleased to have two daughters who are now following in my footsteps to pursue careers in the field.”

Since 1989, Merritt has been providing innovative ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgical treatments to adult and pediatric patients on the campus of Texas Health Dallas. He specializes in eyelid and orbital oncology, complex eyelid and lacrimal reconstruction, pediatric and adult ptosis, the treatment of congenital ocular conditions and reconstructive rehabilitation of those who lose an eye to disease or trauma.

“Merritt was selected for his respected expertise, excellent clinical care, collaboration with health care team members and concern for patients,” said Aurora Estevez, M.D., chief medical officer, Texas Health Dallas. “I look forward to the ongoing yearly peer recognition of physicians who best embody the medical staff vision.”
