Diabetes Program Scholarships to Benefit From Presbyterian Winnsboro Walk-a-Thon
10/06/2008

WINNSBORO, Texas — An estimated 6.3 percent of the population of Wood County has been diagnosed with diabetes, according to the 2001 Diabetes Prevalence in Texas report. To help combat this growing crisis, Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro will host the eighth annual diabetes walk-a-thon and health screening on Saturday, Oct. 25.

The free event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m in a big tent next to Bell’s Pharmacy in downtown Winnsboro. Proceeds from the walk-a-thon and a raffle for prizes will be donated to the Diabetes Awareness Fund through the Presbyterian Foundation to be utilized for scholarships for diabetes education programs at Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro.

About $3,000 in scholarships have been provided in 2008. The event helps close out the annual Autumn Trails Festival.

In addition to the walk-a-thon, individuals from Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro will offer health screenings, including blood sugar tests, blood pressure, and body mass index. Diabetes and other health information will be available under the tent.

“Knowledge is powerful,” said Vicki Johns, R.D., L.D., C.D.E., diabetes and nutrition service manager at the Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro Outpatient Education Center for Diabetes & Nutrition. “The main focus it to heighten community and individual awareness of diabetes and to help seek out those citizens who may be at risk for this disease.”

According to the American Diabetes Association, 23.6 million people in the United States, or 8 percent of the population, have diabetes. From 2005 to 2007, the prevalence of diabetes rose 13.5 percent. More people are recognizing the signs and being diagnosed as the rate of undiagnosed diabetes has fallen to 24 percent from 30 percent in 2005 and 50 percent a decade ago.

Educating patients with diabetes and those at risk is crucial to preventing further complications from the disease, which can include heart disease and stroke, blindness, kidney disease, complications from pregnancy, sexual dysfunction and amputations, the American Diabetes Association said.

To participate in the walk, individuals or teams can come by the center for a form or register that day. Walkers are encouraged to ask friends and family to support with pledges. Water and snacks will be provided for the walkers.

For more information before the day of the walk, please call Vicki Johns at 903-342-4111.
