THR Collects Nearly Half a Million Food Items for Area Charities|
ARLINGTON, Texas – Employees of Texas Health Resources donated more than 470,000 food items this year during the health care system’s annual food drive. The 476,811 items, collected over a two-week period, will be distributed to more than 30 area charitable organizations.
The amount of food collected is an almost 50 percent increase over this year’s goal, said Ron Bergstrom, president of Presbyterian Village North and the 2006 System Food Drive chair.
“With this amount, collectively our local beneficiaries can help provide 572,173 meals,” Bergstrom said.
Since 1997, THR employees have donated canned food and nonperishable food items to benefit area food banks, shelters, churches and health and human service agencies. Just since 2002, THR employees have donated more than 1.7 million canned food items during the annual drive.
“The mission of Texas Health Resources is to improve the health of people in the communities we serve,” said Doug Hawthorne, president and CEO of THR. “It’s difficult to be healthy when a family doesn’t have food to eat. The negative effects of hunger go on and on and can greatly undermine public health.”
The charities receiving the food donated by THR employees are local. For example, food collected in Arlington goes to charities serving Arlington; while items collected at other locations across the THR system help nourish residents of those communities.
“For years, THR has been a leader by paying attention to both what’s important to their employees and what’s important to the communities where their employees live,” said Mary Lee Hafley, president and CEO of SafeHaven of Tarrant County. “The THR philosophy regarding corporate community citizenship is a model for other businesses.”
