Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman Earns National Recognition 12/15/2005
KAUFMAN, Texas – Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman (PHK) earned national recognition last week when the hospital received a top-five-percent performance ranking from the United States Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Premier, Inc., an alliance of 1,500 not-for-profit hospitals across the country. PHK was one of only two hospitals in Texas and the only hospital in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to earn a top-five performance ranking. Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman was specifically recognized for their quality of care results for patients with community acquired pneumonia.
Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman's recognition comes as a result of the hospital's participation in a three-year Medicare project designed to improve the quality of inpatient care in hospitals nationwide. The project includes 268 hospitals from across the country who have volunteered to report their patient care quality data for five conditions that represent a large number of annual hospital admissions. The five medical conditions being tracked and measured against national quality standards include three different heart conditions, pneumonia and hip and knee replacement surgery.
“Designation as a top-five performer on this quality measure is a tribute to the skill and dedication to patient care of our nurses, medical staff physicians, and support staff,” said Kirk King, president of Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman. “We are continually interested in learning new ways to improve care and treatment results for our patients, while at the same time reducing the cost of care. We have welcomed the challenge to participate in this project and to strive for even higher levels of quality care according to national performance standards.”
Overall the Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration project tracks participating hospital performance on a set of 34 nationally defined, standardized measures that represent patient care processes as well as patient outcomes. The goal is to evaluate whether the care provided consistently meets those accepted standards of care which have been proven to lead to better patient outcomes and to reduce the risks of complications and death. Participating hospitals compete for top performer recognition and those who perform in the top 20 percent will receive bonuses on their care reimbursement payments from Medicare.
