HMSW Meets and Exceeds State, National Averages on Patient Perspectives Survey

FORT WORTH, Texas - Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital (HMSW) met and exceeded the state and national averages in every category measured by the first publicly reported, standardized survey measuring patient perspectives of hospital care.

Results of the government-sponsored survey were released today and are based on data collected from October 2006 through June 2007. The survey, entitled Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), was created by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. It was designed to provide consumers with information they can use to help make health care decisions.

"Providing a health care experience that exceeds our patients' expectations is a team effort, and is a key priority at Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital," said HMSW President Brett McClung. "While Harris Southwest usually scores very well in these types of surveys, we are focused on raising the bar and striving to get even better."

The HCAHPS survey is one of several tools consumers can use to make educated decisions about health care, McClung said.

Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital is one of 13 hospitals affiliated with Texas Health Resources (THR), the largest health care system in North Texas. On average, THR hospitals scored above national and state averages in every area surveyed.

The HCAHPS survey measures patients' points of view on several factors, including:

  • Communication with doctors
  • Communication with nurses
  • Responsiveness of hospital staff
  • Pain management
  • Communication about medicines
  • Cleanliness of hospital environment
  • Quietness of hospital environment
  • Discharge information
  • Overall rating of hospital
  • Willingness to recommend a hospital

Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital plans to use the survey results as a benchmark for improvement. In addition to HCAHPS, Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital uses internal patient satisfaction surveys and other measurement tools to help identify best practices and opportunities for improvement.
