PHW Welcomes New Medical Staff Member

WINNSBORO, Texas — Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro is proud to announce the addition of a new urologist to the medical staff — John Roberts Blackburn, M.D.

Dr. Blackburn’s desire to become a physician was in the genes. His brother, who is 12 years his senior, was already a practicing general surgeon when the time came for his younger brother to choose a career path.

"I really looked up to my brother, and I could see that he was enjoying his work as a surgeon," said Dr. Blackburn, board-certified urologist on the medical staff at Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro. "I decided to pursue medicine but chose a different area of concentration — urology."

Urology is a surgical specialty that deals with diseases of both the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Dr. Blackburn provides care for people with many conditions such as urologic cancer, prostate problems, male infertility, erectile dysfunction, impotence, kidney stones and incontinence.

Drawn to urology over other areas of medicine, Dr. Blackburn was excited by the challenges and rewards the specialty offers.

"I like being able to work with adults and children in an office setting and I like the chance to perform surgical procedures," he explained.

Dr. Blackburn has been married to his wife, Betty, for 31 years. Both from Texas, they’ve spent most of their lives in neighboring cities and towns. They have two grown sons, Jason, 27, and Justin, 25. Dr. Blackburn was eager to move to Winnsboro because of the less hectic commute and the outdoor opportunities the community offered. In his free time, Dr. Blackburn enjoys spending time with his family and is also an amateur radio operator.

"I became a licensed radio operator in 1978 before computers became popular. I still enjoy it, even though it’s something of a dying art," said Dr. Blackburn. "I think it’s neat to be able to talk to people all over the world."

Educational Background
In 1971, Dr. Blackburn received his Bachelor of Arts in zoology from the University of Texas in Austin before completing his internships and residencies in surgery and urology at Charity Hospital Tulane Division in New Orleans, La. He was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1983.

"I believe many people in the area can benefit from the specialty of urology. It provides many options for improving their quality of life," said Dr. Blackburn. "As the population ages, more and more people will need a urologist. I wanted to make my services available to help others who require this type of care."
