HMHEB’s 20th Annual Charity Gala Comes From the Heart 03/01/2005
BEDFORD, TEXAS – As the Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital Annual Charity Gala marks its 20th anniversary, one issue remains at the forefront of public health concerns both at the national level and right here in Northeast Tarrant County.
It's the number two killer of men and women.
The cause of one woman's death every minute.
One in five adults has some form of the disease.
$368.4 billion dollars will be spent treating it this year.
It's not car accidents or cancer. It's cardiovascular disease. It's not a “man's disease” or even an “adult's disease.” Cardiovascular disease also affects children - it's the number three cause of death for children under age 15, according to the American Heart Association.
Fortunately, Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital boasts an outstanding heart center that excels in diagnosing and treating heart disease right here in the Northeast Tarrant County community. With three state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories, a 16,000 square foot, multi-million dollar cardiac care unit dedicated to serving the needs of cardiac patients and their families and an extensive cardiac rehabilitation program, Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital leads the way in heart care.
“One of the reasons heart disease dropped from the number one to number two cause of death is due to our success in preventing heart problems by quitting smoking, watching our diets and monitoring our cholesterol and blood pressure,” said Michael Duran, MD, a cardiologist on the medical staff at the hospital. “Our ability to treat heart problems once they occur has also proved critical in reducing deaths due to heart disease. However, continued efforts to implement lifestyle modifications remain very important.”
To help combat the scourge of heart disease, Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital is planning to add a second 20-bed dedicated cardiac care unit staffed by a cadre of nurses and physicians specializing in caring for those with heart disease. To support the construction and equip the new unit, the 20th Annual Charity Gala returns to its roots this year to raise funds for this great cause. The gala will be April 9 at the Dallas Marriott Las Colinas from 6:30 p.m. to midnight.
“At the first event 20 years ago, the Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital Annual Charity Gala raised funds to help the hospital improve the heart health of Northeast Tarrant County,” said Jane Schultz, chairwoman of the all-volunteer committee planning the event. “We hope attendees will enjoy taking in the sights and sounds of 'April in Paris' while helping Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital build an additional cardiac care unit.”
With your help, Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital's vision to provide expert care for the hearts of the citizens of Northeast Tarrant County will continue to be a reality.
