Harris Methodist Springwood Hospital Opens Behavioral Health Center in Southwest Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas — Heart attack survivors face a long process to recovery, both physically and emotionally. Feelings of depression, fear and hopelessness affect 20 percent of coronary heart patients — which increases their risk of dying threefold within six months.

The Springwood Center of Southwest Fort Worth, which opened Oct. 1, now provides the community with a unique mental health treatment program for cardiac patients.

The adult cardiac intensive outpatient program, one of many offered through the center, addresses symptoms of depression in cardiac patients such as social withdrawal, fear of death or adverse cardiac incident, hopelessness, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.

Patients often suffer from the psychological impact of a heart attack even after they’ve physically recovered, said Ramona Osburn, MBA, director of Harris Methodist Springwood Hospital in Bedford.

“Cardiac patients may become depressed because they fear having another heart attack or have trouble coping with all the sudden lifestyle changes they have to make,” Osburn said. “It’s important for them to seek treatment because it can worsen their symptoms and contribute to their disability from heart disease.”

The intensive program involves a time commitment of three hours a day, three days a week and is designed to help participants balance their treatment requirements with work, education and home-life schedules. Patients may self-refer or be referred to the center by a physician, therapist, or an Employee Assistance Program counselor.

In addition to the unique cardiac program, the Springwood Center of Southwest Fort Worth offers a special program designed exclusively for women. The program treats those struggling with pregnancy complications, postpartum depression, loss of a child, infertility, and hormone-related conditions such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, perimenopause and menopause.

The center also offers psychiatric outpatient programs for adults and adolescents and an addiction outpatient program for adults.
