Harris Methodist Walls Regional Offers Drive-Thru Flu Vaccines
10/14/2008

CLEBURNE, Texas — Every year, up to 20 percent of U.S. residents get sick from the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 200,000 people a year are hospitalized for the flu, including 20,000 children, and about 36,000 people die each year, the CDC said.

To help protect people against the flu, Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital will host a drive-thru flu vaccine clinic for adults from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. The clinic will be held at Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital and will wrap around the facility to try to limit congestion. The vaccine will cost $20, with only cash accepted.

“The flu vaccines are something to take seriously,” said Ronda Dillard, R.N., an occupational health nurse at the hospital. “We’re hoping to make this a quick stop while people are running errands on a Saturday so that individuals can take proper preventative measures to guard against the flu.”

The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated, starting in October. Anyone should be vaccinated, but Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that people who fall into the following categories should be considered priority groups:

  • Children six months to 19 years old
  • Pregnant women
  • People age 50 and older
  • People with chronic medical conditions
  • People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
  • Health care workers
  • Households with members in any one of these groups or babies younger than 6 months

With flu season approaching and companies and schools filling up with people who probably should have stayed in bed, the CDC offers six tips to reduce your risk of catching the flu, beyond getting vaccinated. They are:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
  • Clean your hands
  • Practice other good health habits, such as getting plenty of sleep, exercising, managing stress, drinking plenty of fluids and eating nutritious food.
