Laparoscopic Surgical Technique Helps Patient Get Back on Her Feet|
CLEBURNE, Texas — In late October, Doris Yule went in for a routine colonoscopy and soon found herself talking to Dr. Kari Frano about a tumor in her colon.
The tumor was detected, but could not be removed during an earlier colonoscopy. The next day, Yule became the first Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital patient to undergo a laparoscopic colon resection. Frano, a surgeon on the medical staff at Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital, brought her technical experience on the procedure when she started practicing at the hospital in September.
The laparoscopic procedure, while still a major surgery, can cut the recovery time drastically because of smaller incisions. Three weeks out from surgery Yule is back to normal having finished with home health help. Recovery time was shorter compared to the six- to eight-week recovery time without the laparoscopic procedure.
“I just feel like a very fortunate lady that I was taken care of as quickly as possible,” Yule said. “I am so lucky that she is practicing with Dr. Henry Nance. I would recommend her to anyone.”
Helping patients like Yule was exactly what Frano had in mind when she decided to join Nance’s practice. Since Yule’s surgery, Frano has performed another four laparoscopic colon resections at Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital, soon to be Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne.
“It’s exciting to be able to treat patients like Ms. Yule who previously would not have been able to receive the laparoscopic treatment in Cleburne,” Frano said. “Everyone at the hospital has been very supportive of me building my practice and using techniques that are new to the area.”
Frano practices general surgery, which includes repairing hernias and treating gall bladder, breast and thyroid conditions. But she also brings an emphasis on advanced laparoscopic procedures, such as colon resections and anti-reflux procedure.
“We are thrilled that Dr. Frano chose to join the medical staff at Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital, said Blake Kretz, hospital president. “We diligently look for new ways to help serve our patients and bringing the newest surgical techniques to Cleburne is just one example of that commitment.”
