Texas Health Resources Publishes Prayer Book
12/16/2008

ARLINGTON, Texas — In times of pain, bad health or the unknown, many people use prayer to help deal with crisis. According to the National Institute on Health, 45 percent of people surveyed had used prayer for health reasons and 25 percent had others pray for them.

As part of its faith-based mission, the hospitals of Texas Health Resources, the largest health care system in North Texas, will offer a prayer book for patients and their families.

The prayer book is a passport-sized booklet that includes prayers for special occasions and prayers from different faiths.

“Our patients and staff come from several faith traditions. It is our hope that our patients, family and staff find hope and comfort in these prayers,” said Ed George, senior chaplain for Texas Health.

Texas Health Resources’ foundation as a faith-based health care organization is rooted in the healing ministries of the Presbyterian and United Methodist churches. As a faith-based health system, Texas Health recognizes the importance of caring for the whole person: body, mind and spirit. Texas Health hospitals respect and welcome the diversity of religious faiths and the many ways people nurture their spirit.

“Studies have shown that prayers do have an impact on patients’ well-being and can have a calming effect,” said John Engelhard, senior chaplain for Texas Health.

The prayer books will be available throughout the hospitals in waiting rooms, chapels and other locations. Additionally, patients may request the books from their hospital chaplains. Starting in 2009, the books will be available at www.texashealth.org/prayerbook for those who want to print out their own personal copy.

“People come to the hospital for many reasons, whether it is a time of crisis or a time of joy,” said Engelhard. “We hope our patients and their families find in these prayers the words that speak to their joys, sorrows and hopes.”
