Texas Health Winnsboro Opens Senior Care Unit to Serve Older Adults With Depression|
WINNSBORO, Texas — Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Winnsboro has opened its senior care unit and has invited the public to an open house from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16. The event will include tours of the unit and information on services. Refreshments will be provided.
Senior Care Unit staff members include Dr. Sheela Singa (left), medical director of psychiatric services, and Lisa Romine, R.N., nurse manager.
The American Psychological Association estimates that 20 percent of older adults in the community and as many as 50 percent of those living in nursing homes suffer from depression. Older adults account for 20 percent of suicide deaths in the United States, though the age group accounts for only 13 percent of the population.
“Older adults are often an underserved part of the population when it comes to mental health services,” said Patsy Youngs, acting president of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Winnsboro. “Many physical ailments in older adults have a mental health component that health care providers historically have not fully addressed. By having a dedicated unit we can treat the entire person — body, mind and spirit.”
The 12-bed unit will primarily serve patients age 55 and older from Winnsboro and the surrounding communities. The unit will provide inpatient treatment for mental health conditions, such as depression.
More than a dozen patients have been treated in the senior care unit since its opening in January, said Renae Thomas, chief financial officer at Texas Health Winnsboro.
“There is a huge demand for the service in our market area,” she said. “Having this treatment close to home can be a real blessing for patients and their families.”
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, symptoms of depression may include:
- Persistent sad or anxious thoughts
- Hopeless feelings
- Difficulty concentrating
- Loss of interest in activities that once were pleasurable
- Fatigue and decreased energy
- Overeating or appetite loss
- Thoughts of suicide
