Texas Health Resources Again Named to Computerworld List of Best Places to Work in Information Technology|
ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Health Resources has again been selected as one of Computerworld's top workplaces for information technology (IT) professionals. Texas Health placed No. 48 on the list, up from 49 in 2008.
The honor is part of the weekly IT publication’s 16th annual Best Places to Work in IT survey, which was published in the June 15 issue of Computerworld and online at Computerworld.com.
Since 1994, Computerworld’s annual “Best Places to Work in IT” feature has ranked the top 100 work environments for technology professionals, based on a comprehensive questionnaire regarding company offerings in categories such as benefits, diversity, career development, training and retention.
This year, Computerworld surveyed more than 27,000 IT workers for the list, and responses factored heavily in determining the rankings.
“Our skilled information technology professionals are absolutely critical in helping our 14-hospital system serve North Texans’ health care needs,” said Douglas D. Hawthorne, FACHE, Texas Health chief executive officer. “Finding and taking care of our dedicated workers is a top priority at Texas Health.”
One of the system’s major IT initiatives is a common electronic health record (EHR). By 2012 all of Texas Health’s facilities will be using the EHR, which is a computer-based family of systems for collecting, organizing, sharing, and managing clinical and administrative patient information. The ultimate goal is improved quality of care.
All IT employees spend at least a half day with a clinician annually. The program, known as Connections, reinforces the impact that staffers’ jobs have on patient care. Many project teams work from home, taking advantage of social networking to build productivity. Employee development is pervasive and includes mentoring programs.
“Exposure to the care setting inspires our IT professionals, making for an engaged workforce,” said Edward Marx, Texas Health chief information officer. “People understand that their positions have a deep meaning. This adds depth to their work.”
“To be among the Best Places to Work in IT, it’s not enough just to seek out and hire the most talented IT people, offer them competitive pay and provide great benefits,” said Scot Finnie, editor in chief of Computerworld. “The organizations that made this year’s Best Places to Work list sustain a dynamic work environment in which IT professionals keep their hands on the latest technologies and work on projects that are business critical. In the months and years ahead, IT is going to become a key accelerator of business growth.”
