Presbyterian Hospitals of Plano and Allen Host Best-Selling Author and Cancer Survivor on National Cancer Survivors Day
05/21/2008

PLANO, Texas - Cancer survivor and best-selling author Dr. Wendy S. Harpham has shared her uplifting story of surviving non-Hodgkins lymphoma on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Today, through the writing of dozens of award-wining books and articles, and in interviews with major national publications such as The New York Times.

On June 1, Dr. Harpham will visit Plano as the keynote speaker at the first annual "Celebration of Life" event in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day, hosted by Presbyterian Hospitals of Plano and Allen.

An internal medicine physician and mother of three, Dr. Harpham will offer insights from her book Happiness in a Storm: Facing Illness and Embracing Life as a Healthy Survivor. Having coined the term "healthy survivor" when dealing with her own chronic lymphoma, Dr. Harpham provides encouragement to individuals dealing with cancer and any other prolonged or life-threatening illness to make the best treatment choices while simultaneously living life to the fullest.

Born, raised and educated in New York, Dr. Harpham moved to Texas in 1979 for post-graduate training and in 1983, opened her own internal medicine practice at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. She was diagnosed with cancer in 1990 at age 36 and has been in and out of treatment since.

The free event, scheduled from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, June 1, is for cancer survivors and their families and friends. It will be held at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, 6200 West Parker Road, in the first floor lobby of Tower C.
