Texas Health Stephenville Hosting Free Diabetes Support Group|
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — An estimated 8 percent of the United States population has diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. But with the right tools, the disease can often be managed.
Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville is launching a free diabetes support group on Oct. 1 to help individuals throughout Erath County and the surrounding areas better manage their diabetes. The support group will hold its initial meeting from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Texas Health Stephenville Community Outreach Center at 752 North Graham Street.
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), diabetes is the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness and amputation.
“While being diagnosed with diabetes can be scary it does not mean that individuals must completely give up all foods they enjoy, such as sweets and carbohydrates,” said Laurie McGuyer, a clinical dietician at Texas Health Stephenville. “Once a person learns about the disease it can be controlled through diet, exercise, planning and medication. Meeting together in group settings to talk about the challenges of living with diabetes often helps individuals better manage the disease.”
According to the American Diabetes Association, symptoms of diabetes include:
- Frequent urination
- Excessive thirst
- Extreme hunger
- Unusual weight loss
- Increased fatigue
- Blurry vision
An estimated $1 out of every $10 spent on health care is attributed to diabetes for an annual cost to in the United States of $174 billion in 2007, according to the ADA.
Texas Health Stephenville has an American Diabetes Association-recognized program that teaches classes for individuals diagnosed with diabetes and pre-diabetes. The classes cover many topics such as meal planning, exercise, and long-term complications of diabetes. The hands-on classes are designed to give individuals the tools to manage the disease and lessen further complications.
