Texas Health Arlington Memorial Breaks Ground on Emergency Department Expansion|
ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital broke ground on a $4.5 million expansion of its Cravens Emergency Department this week.
The 3,520 square-foot expansion, funded largely by donations, will add 16 new treatment beds, a new triage area and an enlarged waiting area. It’s projected for completion in July 2010.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10 on the hospital's north lawn.
Eight of the 16 new beds are earmarked for fast-track exam space to help speed treatment for minor ailments and accommodate the nearly 200 patients cared for daily, said Dr. Hoyt Frenzel, medical director of the department.
“This expansion is important because our current volume and acuity outstrips our existing resources in our current space,” Frenzel said. “The separate fast-track area will allow patients with non-emergent medical conditions to be treated quickly without impacting the rest of the department.”
Last year, approximately 60,000 patients visited the hospital’s emergency department. The new additions will help meet the growing needs of the Arlington area and allow room for future disease-specific outpatient clinics intended to give patients the tools to manage chronic conditions.
Outpatient clinics are planned for patients with hypertension, chronic pain, asthma, and other chronic illnesses that often bring people to the emergency room and lead to hospital admission. Texas Health Arlington Memorial currently offers outpatient programs for management of diabetes and heart failure.
“This project is a two-pronged approach to improving patient care that marks a shift in the way disease is treated and managed,” said Kirk King, FACHE, hospital president. “We’re expanding to meet the increasing needs of the population, but also striving to manage unnecessary visits to the ED by improving the health of our residents. It’s a great benefit to the community.”
