Comprehensive Treatment Program for Diseases of the Colon and Rectum Now Offered at Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital
06/03/2008

FORT WORTH, Texas – If you’re over 50 years old, getting screened for colon cancer could save your life.

Colon cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the U.S, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As many as 60 percent of deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented with regular screening tests.

In order to address the treatment needs of the local community, Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital (HMSW) has implemented a comprehensive treatment program for people with diseases of the colon and rectum.

“Our emergency room physicians see an average of three to five patients a week with colorectal problems,” said Brett McClung, president of Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital. “We saw a community need and we are excited to provide a comprehensive program offering a variety of treatment options for our patients.”

The program is run by a highly-trained colorectal surgeon Chad E. Lewis, M.D. Lewis received a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry at the University of Indianapolis in 1995 and attended medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in 2004, followed by a colon and rectal surgery residency from the University of Texas in 2005. He began his practice in Grapevine, Texas, before coming to Harris Methodist Southwest.

Lewis is a member of several local and national professional societies and associations, including, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association and the Tarrant County Medical Society.
