Texas Health Azle Offers Bone Density Scans
01/18/2010

AZLE, Texas — Osteoporosis, a gradual thinning and weakening of the bones, is a national public health issues for more than 44 million Americans. In fact, this disease is responsible for more than 1.5 million bone fractures each year in the United States, costing more than $14 billion annually in medical care costs.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle is stepping up to fight this silent disease by installing a new bone densitometer, a tool that measures the density of the spine, hip and forearm, giving physicians a window into the patient’s overall bone strength.

“In just 30 seconds, this highly precise bone densitometer helps physicians identify patients who are at high-risk for developing osteoporosis,” said Kay Kuenstler, M.D., radiologist on the medical staff at Texas Health Azle. “We hope that this new service will begin to reduce the number of individuals who struggle from osteoporosis and bone fractures.”

The bone density test is brief and painless, Kuenstler said.

“The entire test takes no longer than 10 minutes,” she added. “Patients who are diagnosed with significant bone loss will also receive information on changing their diet, exercise habits and medication to prevent further bone deterioration.”
