38 New Nurses Will Begin Careers at Texas Health Resources Hospitals|
ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Health Resources, the largest health care system in North Texas in terms of patients served, today announced that 38 nurses graduated from El Centro College in a Texas Health-sponsored program. The new nurses, made up of current employees and dependents, completed course work to earn an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) and will now take the National Council Licensure Exam to complete their RN requirements.
“We’ve already placed 35 of the 38 new nurses in residencies or internships around the Texas Health system,” said Jim Dunn, chief learning officer for Texas Health. “We anticipate that all 38 will have a placement by June.”
The program allows current Texas Health employees and their dependents to work toward an ADN at El Centro College. The hospital pays for tuition, books, fees and offers clinical experiences and on-site mentoring at the hospitals. Students in the program receive more mentoring and monitoring and have a shorter acclimation period for new jobs than the average ADN student. Because they are trained on the same hospital equipment used at Texas Health hospitals, the nurses are ready to work their first day on the job.
“At Texas Health we believe in growing our own nurses,” said Dunn. “This program gives employees who want to become nurses the opportunity to pursue their dream. Texas Health benefits with a pipeline of nurses eager to get out in the field.”
A similar program has been developed for the allied health field. Texas Health is working with Brookhaven College in Farmers Branch to offer a program for future Radiology Technicians. The first class began their coursework in January 2010.
“We’ve had great success with this program,” said Dunn. “Since we began in 2005, we have brought 274 new nurses into Texas Health Resources. Many of them will continue on to earn their bachelor’s in nursing. We are proud to be able to offer this program to our employees.”
