Texas Health Denton Employees Support Denton Community Food Center

DENTON, Texas — Employees at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, as part of an ongoing mission to improve the health of the people in the communities they serve, raised nearly $6,000 to support the Denton Community Food Center.

"I am humbled to work with such compassionate and caring individuals," said Stan Morton, president of Texas Health Denton. "This year's efforts garnered more than double the amount raised in 2009. We feel blessed to be able to give back and further invest in our community."

"Support from community friends like Texas Health Denton is critical to our customers, especially during the summer months because children spend more time at home and can no longer eat subsidized school breakfasts and lunches," said Tom Newell, chairman of the board for the Denton Community Food Center. "While we appreciate receiving canned goods, we are able to multiply cash donations by up to six or seven times. This means that the hospital's gift of nearly $6,000 will turn into $36,000 to $42,000 worth of food."

Newell estimated that the monies would provide food for nearly 1,200 families for eight weeks.

Hospital employees were creative when it came to their fundraising activities. During the two-week event, employees had the opportunity to participate in:

  • A cake walk
  • A day of dining at Chili's, where a percentage of the final bill supported the food drive initiative
  • A chili cook-off
  • A dunking booth
  • A bake-off
  • A Minute to Win It competition
  • An Ice Cream Social
  • Canned food collections

In 2009, the Denton Community Food Center noted a 25 percent increase in families who needed assistance. With a history of serving Denton County, north of Lake Lewisville, the completely volunteer-driven organization expects community need to remain constant.
