Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro Offers Tips on Saving Gas
04/17/2008

WINNSBORO, Texas – Gas prices have reached all-time highs and are not expected to go down any time soon. With summer prices expected to reach $4 a gallon this summer, following are some tips to help save gas:

Ask yourself every time you plan to use your car, truck, SUV, or van, "Is this trip really necessary?" According to thefrugallife.com, every mile you drive your vehicle will cost you at least an average of 36 cents. If the trip is not necessary, think twice before using your vehicle.

Make a list of all errands in order of their location before you leave home. Move from one to the other without backtracking. Backtracking requires additional gasoline.

Look at what can be done locally. For example, some may not realize that they can get medical work done in Winnsboro. Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro offers services such as wound care for people who suffer from chronic, non-healing wounds. PHW’s nationally recognized Diabetes Management Program includes individual instruction, meal planning and monthly support group meetings, all designed to help patients manage their diabetes. Other services include pulmonary rehab services, X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, nuclear medicine studies, bone densitometry, digital mammography, inpatient and outpatient surgical services, physical therapy and a sleep medicine lab.

Cut down on the number of shopping trips. Try to plan your shopping so that you can run all of your errands in fewer trips. Thefrugallife.com suggests combining trips. Driving to run errands many times a week can become very expensive.

Target the best time of day to buy gas. Kiplinger.com recommends the best time of day to fill up a tank is before dawn or late at night, when the sun and traffic volume are both down. Stations usually will raise prices during the day, especially for rush hour.

Check your air filter. Thedailygreen.com says a clean air filter can improve gas mileage as much as 10 percent.

Fill your tank only when it is ¾ empty. According to the Personal Finance Management Guide, if you always top off your tank, you are driving around with unnecessary weight in your car.
