I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
November is National Prematurity Month, and as chairman of the March of Dimes’ 2009 Dallas and Fort Worth area March for Babies, I encourage you to support the March of Dimes and its mission for healthy babies.
Every three and a half minutes, a baby is born with a birth defect. In the United States, the annual economic cost associated with preterm birth is more than $26 billion.
With more than 25,000 babies delivered at our hospitals last year, I understand the harm that can result when expectant mothers don’t get appropriate prenatal care. And as a father of five and grandfather of three beautiful baby girls, the health of babies is an issue close to my heart.
That’s why I’ve asked other North Texas health care systems, county hospitals, and insurers to help raise a record $3.4 million through the 2009 March for Babies. Contributions from the April 18 walk help the March of Dimes fund vital research and education.
Texas Health hospitals partner with March of Dimes to offer programs which have been nationally recognized. Our two flagship hospitals, Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth and Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas, are among 16 of the nation’s leading hospitals working to redefine perinatal care as part of a national initiative to eliminate preventable birth injuries.
