I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
As chairman of the March of Dimes’ 2009 Dallas and Fort Worth area March for Babies, I encourage you to sign up for the April 18 walk in Dallas or Fort Worth and support the March of Dimes’ mission for healthy babies.
Prematurity is the leading killer of newborns. Despite advances in medicine, premature births remain high today, affecting nearly 500,000 newborns annually. For babies who survive premature birth, it can cause an array of neurological illnesses including cerebral palsy and mental retardation.
In the United States, the annual economic cost associated with preterm birth is more than $26 billion.
The March of Dimes is working hard to raise awareness and fund additional research to identify the causes of premature birth. The March for Babies has raised an amazing $1.8 billion since its inception in 1970. Money collected through the walks funds vital research and education and supports community programs that help mothers have healthy, full-term pregnancies.
That’s why I have asked other North Texas health care systems, county hospitals, and insurers to help raise a record $3.4 million through the 2009 Dallas and Fort Worth area March for Babies. For Texas Health Resources and its faith based family of hospitals, Texas Health Presbyterian, Texas Health Harris Methodist, and Texas Health Arlington Memorial, I’m Doug Hawthorne.
