I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”

Texas Health hospitals strive to deliver consistent, quality patient care in safe, caring environments. We believe consumers and businesses should have access to information that helps them evaluate the quality and safety of healthcare providers.

The Texas Department of State Health Services collects a great deal of data about hospital quality and safety. And we are glad to provide that data. Unfortunately, much of the information made available by the State can be a challenge for consumers to find and to use. We want to help change that.

Texas Health supports four key principles recently adopted by the Texas Hospital Association to promote transparency and accountability for hospital quality and complaint information.

One: Information should be accessible. Hospital quality and complaint data available to the public should be accessible online, easy to find, and easily searchable.

Two: Information should be consumer-focused. With so much raw data available, it is difficult for consumers to know where to look for information. Consolidation in one user-friendly web site would be helpful.

Three: Information should be timely. Consumers deserve access to relevant data that is not outdated or obsolete.

And four: Public information and complaint investigations should be fully funded. State legislators should allocate funds to hire enough staff in the Department of State Health Services to handle the investigations and documentation.

For Texas Health Resources and its faith-based family of hospitals, Texas Health Presbyterian, Texas Health Harris Methodist, and Texas Health Arlington Memorial, I’m Doug Hawthorne.
